On Saturday, January 17, SMHS was proudly represented at the 2026 Project 351 Launch Day in Boston. This year’s SMHS Project 351 Ambassador, Fenno Greene, took part in the full day of events, which began at Faneuil Hall and concluded at the JFK Presidential Library.
Throughout the day, ambassadors traveled to sites around the city to participate in service projects. Joining Fenno was senior Shreya Shukla, who attended as a Project 351 alum. Also present was Molly Kent, a 2020 SMHS graduate and Project 351 alum, who served on the operations team and helped ensure the day’s events ran smoothly.
It was an inspiring day of leadership, service, and connection. We are proud of all the Blue Knights who continue to represent SMHS through Project 351.

Grade 8 science students recently completed their Physics Unit with an exciting final project: designing, building, and racing their own cars. Using only a set list of materials, each group created a car that generated its own force and traveled at least one meter.
After several class days of planning and building, students put their designs to the test in a race. The project tied together key physics concepts including potential and kinetic energy, speed and velocity, and Newton’s Laws of Motion. The challenge was both fun and rewarding!
Thank you to grade 8 science teachers, Mr. Dumas and Ms. Ferreira, for creating such interactive and engaging projects!

National Honor Society members Alexa Christensen, Maddie Brown, and Lane Kraihanzel spent a recent Saturday helping the Cape Cod Tufts University Alumni group by collecting donated bags of canned food and paper goods and delivering them to the Sandwich Food Pantry.
The students attended the alumni meeting at Alberto’s Restaurant in Hyannis, where they were thanked for their service. During the introductions, it was also shared that Alexa Christensen was a recipient of the Tufts Book Award last spring, which recognized her academic achievement and character.
We are proud of these students for giving back to the community and representing SMHS through service and leadership.

The SMHS Robotics Club has been busy this winter, competing in the VEX Winter Classic Tournament at Mashpee Middle High School on January 10 and the VEX Shark Showdown at Monomoy Regional High School on January 17.
Club members Luke Glaser, Owen Kravitz, Dillon Florence, Paxton Harper, Jonathan McElroy, Paxton O’Kane, and Myles Keegan represented SMHS with pride. While the team did not advance to the finals in Mashpee, both SMHS robots performed well at Monomoy, finishing 11th and 20th out of 27 teams and advancing to the quarterfinals.
Throughout the competitions, our students demonstrated determination, integrity, sportsmanship, and strong school spirit. Thank you to our generous sponsors: HII, Cape Cod 5, and the MIT Club of Cape Cod for their continued support and a special thanks to Mr. Harper for the delicious doughnuts!

While examining a sword believed to date back to 1764–1765, SMHS U.S. History teacher Mr. Michael Welch put his extensive knowledge to use and uncovered a fascinating twist. After taking detailed field notes, photographing the piece, and creating a digital 3-D scan, he realized something didn’t add up. With help from a world-renowned expert in 18th-century British weapons, the sword was identified as a Model 1796 Hanger used by British sergeants years after the American Revolution.
This means the sword may have once belonged to General Joseph Warren, but it was almost certainly not the weapon he carried during the Revolutionary War. How he may have obtained it or whether it was his at all, remains a historical mystery still waiting to be uncovered.
Mr. Welch’s passion for historical research and artifacts brings history to life for students, showing them how curiosity, evidence, and critical thinking turn the past into an ongoing investigation, not just a chapter in a textbook.

SMHS recently hosted a Morgan’s Message Game at Gallo Ice Arena to help raise awareness of student-athlete mental health. Morgan’s Message is a student-athlete mental health organization created in honor of Morgan Rodgers, a Duke lacrosse player, with a mission to support athletes’ mental health, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations.
School chapters promote this work through awareness events, team talks, mental health resources, and Morgan’s Message Games across different sports. Many SMHS student-athletes have become deeply involved in this effort, led by junior Elizabeth Stutzman.
We are grateful for the strong support from our fans and the teams who participated in making this event meaningful and impactful.

SMHS recently partnered with Old Rochester Middle School to host a Playbook Initiative workshop, bringing middle school students together for an afternoon focused on learning how to be upstanders and support one another.
The Playbook Initiative is a student-led program that empowers young people to create inclusive, respectful school communities by standing up to bias, bullying, and exclusion.
The workshop was facilitated by our Playbook Initiative leaders, seniors Peter Milburn and Shreya Shukla, alongside student leaders from Old Rochester.
By the end of the day, students not only gained tools to help make their schools more inclusive and positive, they also made new friends from Old Rochester, strengthening connections beyond their own school community.
Special thanks to grade 8 teacher, Mr. Duffany, for organizing this workshop.

Grade 8 Computer Science students coded and designed prototypes that could dispense an object to help a person or an animal, or improve safety in dark environments. Students presented their final products to SMHS faculty who were impressed with the ideas and craftsmanship applied.
This very popular class is part of Project Lead the Way, a program that builds essential skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.
Special thanks to grade 8 computer science teacher, Ms. Beth Donahue, for her inspirational guidance during the project process.
