This Week on the Ridge

We were excited to get back into the swing of things after the two weeks away from school! We've kicked off Read Across America Week with a special visit to the Center for Active Living, where students had the opportunity to read with members of the community. Today, we also welcomed community readers into classrooms to share books with students.

In addition, trout lessons with Mrs. Skirvan have started up. Our school is raising Brook Trout that will be released into a local stream this spring. The trout arrived as eggs, have already passed the alevin stage, and are now growing as fry. Each class will visit the trout hatchery room to learn about the trout life cycle, their special adaptations for survival, and how we can help protect them.

This week, Oak Ridge celebrated our wonderful school social workers Mrs. Sara Marshall and Ms. Gaby Martinez. We wish them both a very happy School Social Worker Appreciation Week! We are so fortunate to have such amazing professionals supporting our students and staff every day!

Teacher Feature

Shawna Baacke
Language Based Classroom Teacher

I have driven to all lower 48 states, all the lower provinces of Canada and 42 National Parks! What I love most about teaching at Oak Ridge is my students. Working with 5th and 6th grade LBC students allows me to design instruction in ways that truly meet their needs and help them persevere through challenges they once thought they couldn’t overcome. I love finding new ways to teach reading, writing, and math so learning finally makes sense for them. One of the most meaningful parts of my work is watching students’ self-perception change. Seeing their confidence grow as they begin to believe in themselves and recognize their own strengths.

Spotlight on Specials

In the art room, I encourage exploration, original ideas, and creative problem-solving, while also helping students take pride in caring for our shared studio and materials. Most importantly, I want students to find joy in creative challenges and feel proud of the work they create.

In 3rd grade, students will get their hands dirty creating clay projects. They will learn new clay-building skills while sculpting their own creations. We will then practice drawing some of our favorite things while creating a collaborative classroom coloring book.

In 4th grade, we will push our creativity using oil pastels to create original animal portraits inspired by the Fauvist art movement. After that, we will dive into color theory through gelli printing, experimenting with layers, patterns, and texture to create both abstract and representational artwork.

In 5th grade, we will continue an almost-famous Oak Ridge project: cake sculpture! Students will design and build slices of cake using cardboard, paper pulp, clay, and paint—the possibilities are endless. We will then design and build food trucks that will expand into original businesses in the tech room.

In 6th grade, students will capture the beauty of nature and special places through watercolor polaroids. To celebrate four years of Oak Ridge art class, they will finish by creating miniature 3D art galleries to showcase their favorite artwork from over the years.

Thank you for supporting art education!

Oak Ridge Student Beat

Oak Ridge Students Read Across Sandwich
By Kaia Merritt and Alexandra Silva

On Thursday, students from our school went to the Center for Active Living (CAL) to spend time with some of our senior community members to kick off the start of Read Across America. When we arrived, we were all excited, but a little nervous. However, we greeted everyone with a smile and soon we felt like best friends! During our time together, we shared stories and talked to one another about the community. Adults and students took turns reading and sharing life stories. We hope to continue this partnership by inviting the seniors to come to Oak Ridge School, and hopefully soon we can go back to the CAL for more reading adventures with our new friends!

Recyclable Donations Needed:
We need cereal boxes, magazines, and colorful junk mail to help students create a recycled trout mural in the new Trout Room off the library.
As students nurture trout for spring release, this eco-friendly project teachers kindness to nature and sparks imagination. Clean donations are greatly appreciated and help bring this hands-on learning to life.
Thank you,
Mrs. Skirvan
